The wonderful eye doctor Fred Hollows said, "It's obscene to let people go blind when they don't have to." He made it his life's mission to travel to places where people didn't have a surgeon to save their sight. As an assistant to an optometrist, I've come to realise that so many of us take our eyesight for granted. Every day, my boss tests someone who has irreversible eye damage because they failed to have check ups. I sometimes wonder if Dr Hollows felt despair when people with every opportunity to visit an optometrist didn't do so.
